When Helen Carlisle became a widow, her life of acting like everything was normal was far from over. The act continues, pretending she was sad that her husband was gone and that his very memory did not leave her with night terrors that she could not tell to anyone.
When Ray Novak reenters her life, she wonders if he might be the key to a life beyond the theater curtain that has bound her, but the glimmer of hope faded as she realized the bonds her dead husband and his family still had over her.
Ray and Helen are both very real characters in this book. I would not want to give away too much of the story, which would be easy to do. This book addresses some real issues of spousal abuse and the effect it can have on generations, while again, like Ms. Sundin’s other novel’s give another view of WW2 that is a clear picture of what faced the real men and women of 1944 & ’45.
You can almost smell the smoke when you read her words, feel the pain as each character deals with their inner demons that plague them.
This book is not just a novel, it is a window that will open your soul to searching along with Ray and Helen. It also gives you a picture inside the life of a battered wife, like I have not read before.
I highly recommend this book and the other two before it. They are not your mother’s christian fiction novels, with happy prairie scenes and fresh baked pies, but they will touch your heart and leave you with a warm feeling still when you finish. – Martha
